This newsletter: The Friends of Waccamaw Library's digital newsletter (sent on the first and 15th of each month) aims to let you know what's happening on the Waccamaw Neck and Georgetown (farther afield if it's library-related). This e-communication is sent to all Friends (whose e-dresses we have) and to all who ask to be added to the e-list.

In addition to the programming developed by the library system and the Friends (in red), we will cover other opportunities for quality experiences, education and entertainment. The information is organized by date, so scroll down to the date you are seeking. If you are part of a group or organization with news to share, we welcome your announcement. Keep it short; just the facts. We cannot reproduce an elaborate pdf with graphics and photos. The key information needed includes: Title of event, Where held, When (date and time), BRIEF description, Benefit for (if applicable), Cost (if any), Contact (phone and email), Website (for more information).

To be added to the e-mail list or to submit an announcement, please send your information directly to the e-newsletter editor Linda Ketron at:  linda@classatpawleys.com.

CALENDAR OF COMMUNITY EVENTS

FOWL Community Book Donations: Friends of Waccamaw Library  volunteers receive the donated books, categorize them, and deliver to them to a number of literacy-based and social-service nonprofits in the Waccamaw Neck Community. Recent book recipients have been Freedom Readers, DSS offices, Friends of Arnett AME foster children, Waccamaw Recreation Center, and Habitat Restore. You can help us make a difference in our community by cleaning out your shelves of children's books and donating them to FOWL for this worthy cause.

Please Complete the 2020 Census to Help Our Community
The mission of the Friends of the Waccamaw Library is to support the library.  FOWL urges you to complete the 2020 Census to help us in our mission.  Federal and state funding relies on census data to allocate resources for libraries, school meal programs, Medicare and Medicaid, public transportation, education, recreation, and so many other important programs that are critical to our quality of life.  If SC citizens don't complete the 2020 Census, it will appear that our population has decreased, so funding to these vital programs will be decreased! We could lose our 7th seat in Congress (gained after the 2010 census revealed sufficient growth to add a seat). Send this plea to all of your social network and take the 10 minutes to access and complete the 2020 Census online: www.2020census.gov or call 1.844.330.2020.

A Plea for Help from Freewoods Farm
Freewoods Farm in Burgess (9515 Freewoods Road off U.S. 707) is the only African-American historical living farm museum in the United States, devoted to recognizing and perpetuating the contributions of African-American farmers. Due to the Coronavirus, the main source of funding - events, weddings, tours, etc. - for Freewoods Farm has dried up. It's planting time and there are expenses: cost of fertilizer, seed, labor, animal feed, insurance, etc. No mechanized machinery is used. Though they have applied for Federal loans/grants, they have heard nothing.  President O'Neal Smalls is requesting financial help. If you can, please send a check  payable to: Freewoods Foundation and mail to O'Neal Smalls, President, 900 Veterans Road, Columbia, SC 29209. Freewoods is a 501(c)(3) foundation and your contribution is tax deductible. For more information, visit www.FreewoodsFarm.com.

We would like to draw your attention to the newly stocked shelves of "Bargain Books to Benefit FOWL" at the Litchfield Exchange (14363 Ocean Highway behind Applewood House of Pancakes). By now your book supply should be running low! Browse through organized hardcovers ($1) and paperbacks (50 cents) and find recent releases and older treasures you always meant to read. Your donations can be placed in the envelopes provided and slipped under the door of Art Works (if no one is on duty). The traditional FOWL Annual Book Sale in July has been postponed until the fall; it will be combined with the Holiday Book Sale on Nov. 12-15. Details soon.

Mac began visiting the island in the late 1940s, and he has visited or lived on Pawleys during part of each year, spending high school and college summers there, living in the back of the Pawleys Island Drugstore, and observing what went on at the Lafayette Pavilion. Returning from active duty in the Navy in 1960, he served as planner and overseer of the new Pawley Pavilion and met his wife, Mary Prevost Shower, an artist living in NYC and the niece of Charlotte and Cuthbert Prevost who owned the Summer Academy. Married in Georgetown in late 1960, the couple lived on the island during the winter of 1960-1961, bought property on the creek side, and built a prefabricated beach house, trucking the parts from Chapel Hill and constructing the house themselves. Later, Mac was the Project Manager for the construction of Pawleys Pier Village and his growing family lived on Pawleys Island. In 1974, he was one of the developers of Belle Isle Villas and bought property and built a clubhouse on the island. Mac and Mary and their three sons took long distance sailing adventures on their sailboat, starting in 1976 and ending in 2007. During the years between 1954 and 2018, Mac has observed and described the changes that have occurred on Pawleys Island. He lived the dream; he helped create it for others. Mac has previously written the sailing memoir, Cruising Through Life, and four South Carolina non-fiction maritime history books, Wooden Ships on Winyah BayThe Life and Times of Georgetown Sea Captain Abram Jones SlocumThe Lumber Boom of Coastal South Carolina, and Georgetown's North Island. $30, 843.235.9600 or www.ClassAtPawleys.com.

Each event is categorized (e.g., music, art), and you can choose to view any or all of the categories by clicking on them in the dropboxes at the top of the calendar. For health reasons, John is seeking a dedicated person or group to take the reins of this valuable website and continue to provide timely information about the quality cultural offerings along the Grand Strand.
