This e-communication supplements the hard copy newsletter mailed quarterly and is sent to all Friends (whose e-dresses we have) and to all who ask to be added to the Constant Contact list.
In addition to the programming developed by the library system and the Friends (in red), we will cover other opportunities for quality experiences, education and entertainment. July Photographer at the Waccamaw Library: Ed Robidoux. A month-long exhibition of works based on Ed Robidoux's preferred style of landscapes and long exposures will showcase images of southern beaches, mountains, flora and fauna, and cultural heritage. Skilled in macro photography - the art of taking detailed, close-up pictures of very small objects like the tendrils of plants - he especially enjoys the challenge of capturing some of life's lovely, transient moments. Coming from a mechanical-engineering background, and he approaches the craft of photography not only with passion but also through discipline. With considerable experience in camerawork gleaned from studies and achievements dating from the 1970s onward, Robidoux relishes sharing with others the value of good technique. He has been an instructor for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) of Coastal Carolina University and for Southern Exposures and Art, teaching mainly Photoshop Creative Cloud and Photoshop Elements, which enable fellow photographers to become more skilled in digital photography, particularly in post-processing, photographic workflows. In October 2015, he founded the Tidelands Photography Club and currently serves as its President. The club's dual mission is to capture the natural beauty and heritage of our area while promoting amongst its members, through ongoing education and through outings, an improved level of photographic ability. Winner of the 2016 Academy Award's Best Picture category, the R-rated feature handles in a sensitive yet conclusive way the issue of pedophilia in the Catholic Church as uncovered by the Boston Globe in 2001. The movie holds a 96% rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Vatican Radio, an official media service of the Holy See, has also called it "honest" and "compelling." Tuesday, July 26 6:30 PM - Marketing for Writers presented by C. Hope Clark, mystery author and founder of Funds for Writers at Waccamaw Neck Branch Library (41 St. Paul Place). Books can sometimes take years to write, edit and publish. Many authors focus on the book when, in fact, their writing career ought to cover more bases, reach further and deeper, fight for a following, and actually produce an income. Using tips from her decade-plus career, C. Hope Clark discusses where various funding streams exist to assist in writing endeavors. For instance, any writer can freelance online and for magazines, using these experiences as barometers for the quality of their work. There are retreats and the occasional grant and - in the last few years - crowdfunding has risen to the surface to build seed money and a platform following. Attend this enlightening talk to learn more about how to use all sorts of methods to generate income, and how writing for a living is about more than a book ... it's about building a name as a writer as well as about selling a finished product. 10 AM-4 PM - Living History Through The Eyes Of The Enslaved.
Friendfield Village at Hobcaw Barony is the site of The Slave Dwelling Project's living history open house. Director Joe McGill and costumed interpreters present the African American story of slavery through storytelling and demonstrations of outdoor cooking, blacksmithing, brickmaking and quilting. Participants enter the main gate at the Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center and drive their own car to the village at any time between 10 AM-4 PM to interact, tour and observe. The cabins, doctor's office and village church are open to visitors. Founder Joe McGill is nationally prominent for traveling and spending the night in former slave dwellings on plantations, in urban homes and commercial buildings, drawing attention to existing slave structures and pursuing dialogue that enhances the knowledge of history, race and reconciliation. A lecture and luncheon, held at Carefree Catering and celebrating Belle Baruch's birthday, author and attorney Thomas Sumter Tisdale, Jr. speaks on the life of Theodosia (1783-1813), daughter of Vice President Aaron Burr and wife of Brookgreen Plantation's Joseph Alston. She was a brilliant, independent and highly-educated woman whose life was quite unique for a woman in 19th century America. Tom Tisdale is the publisher of Home House Press, the 2001 author of A Lady of the High Hills, Natalie Delage Sumter, the friend and confidante of Theodosia, and writer of other books, short stories and plays. Through Summer - An Evolution in Technology: How We Communicate. The Horry County Museum is pleased to announce the opening of the new exhibit: An Evolution in Technology: How We Communicate in June 2016. This exhibit explores the evolution of how we, as human beings, communicate through technology and how it has reshaped our existence during the past century. The advancements in technology are continually evolving and what seems a mere dream today might be reality tomorrow. The Horry County Museum's, "Mama, Let's Make a Moon," features original illustrations from Lowcountry award-winning artist and children's book author, Clay Rice. Taken from the pages of Rice's children's book, Mama, Let's Make a Moon, these original hand-cut illustrations weave their way through the mountains of the Appalachia to bring the characters toward core family values such as love of family, making something from nothing and just plain having fun. Through Sept. 5 - Nature Connects Art. Brookgreen Gardens will host 12 larger-than-life LEGO® brick sculpture installations in its Native Wildlife Zoo. Created by Sean Kenney, renowned artist and children's author, "Nature Connects" is an award winning exhibit currently touring the country. Made from almost a half million LEGO® bricks, the sculptures bring nature to life with a 6-foot tall hummingbird hovering over a trumpet flower, a deer family made from 48,000 bricks, a giant tortoise, a 7-foot long giant dragonfly, and more. Through Sept. 10 - The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum (3100 S.
