Your bi-monthly newsletter is here!

What's happening on the Waccamaw Neck ~ compliments of the Friends of Waccamaw Library!

The Friends of Waccamaw Library's bi-monthly digital newsletter aims to let you know what's happening on the Waccamaw Neck and Georgetown (farther afield if it's library-related). This e-communication supplements the hard copy newsletter mailed quarterly and is sent to all Friends (whose e-dresses we have) and to all who ask to be added to the Constant Contact list.

In addition to the programming developed by the library system and the Friends (in red), we will cover other opportunities for quality experiences, education and entertainment. The information is organized by date, so scroll down to the date you are seeking. If you are part of a group or organization with news to share, we welcome your announcement. Keep it short; just the facts. We cannot reproduce an elaborate pdf with graphics and photos. The key information needed includes: Title of event, Where held, When (date and time), BRIEF description, Benefit for (if applicable), Cost (if any), Contact (phone and email), Website (for more information).

To be added to the e-mail list or to submit an announcement, please send your information directly to the e-newsletter editor Linda Ketron at:  linda@classatpawleys.com.

July Photographer at the Waccamaw Library: Ed RobidouxA month-long exhibition of works based on Ed Robidoux's preferred style of landscapes and long exposures will showcase images of southern beaches, mountains, flora and fauna, and cultural heritage. Skilled in macro photography - the art of taking detailed, close-up pictures of very small objects like the tendrils of plants - he especially enjoys the challenge of capturing some of life's lovely, transient moments. Coming from a mechanical-engineering background, and he approaches the craft of photography not only with passion but also through discipline. With considerable experience in camerawork gleaned from studies and achievements dating from the 1970s onward, Robidoux relishes sharing with others the value of good technique. He has been an instructor for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) of Coastal Carolina University and for Southern Exposures and Art, teaching mainly Photoshop Creative Cloud and Photoshop Elements, which enable fellow photographers to become more skilled in digital photography, particularly in post-processing, photographic workflows. In October 2015, he founded the Tidelands Photography Club and currently serves as its President. The club's dual mission is to capture the natural beauty and heritage of our area while promoting amongst its members, through ongoing education and through outings, an improved level of photographic ability. Friday, July 22
11 AM-1 PM - The Moveable Feast: Julia Franks (Over the Plain House) at Carefree Catering. It's 1939, and the federal government has sent USDA agent Virginia Furman into the North Carolina mountains to instruct families on modernizing their homes and farms. There she meets farm wife Irenie Lambey, who is immediately drawn to the lady agent's self-possession. Already, cracks are emerging in Irenie's fragile marriage to Brodis, an ex-logger turned fundamentalist preacher: She has taken to night ramblings through the woods to escape her husband's bed, storing strange keepsakes in a mountain cavern. To Brodis, these are all the signs that Irenie - tiptoeing through the dark in her billowing white nightshirt - is practicing black magic. When Irenie slips back into bed with a kind of supernatural stealth, Brodis senses that a certain evil has entered his life, linked to the lady agent, or perhaps to other, more sinister forces. Working in the stylistic terrain of Amy Greene and Bonnie Jo Campbell, this mesmerizing debut by Julia Franks is the story of a woman intrigued by the possibility of change, escape, and reproductive choice - stalked by a Bible-haunted man who fears his government and stakes his integrity upon an older way of life. As Brodis chases his demons, he brings about a final act of violence that shakes the entire valley. In this spellbinding Southern story, Franks bares the myths and mysteries that modernity can't quite dispel. $25, 843-235-9600 or ClassAtPawley.com.

6:30 PM - Marketing for Writers presented by C. Hope Clark, mystery author and founder of Funds for Writers at Waccamaw Neck Branch Library (41 St. Paul Place). Books can sometimes take years to write, edit and publish. Many authors focus on the book when, in fact, their writing career ought to cover more bases, reach further and deeper, fight for a following, and actually produce an income. Using tips from her decade-plus career, C. Hope Clark discusses where various funding streams exist to assist in writing endeavors. For instance, any writer can freelance online and for magazines, using these experiences as barometers for the quality of their work. There are retreats and the occasional grant and - in the last few years - crowdfunding has risen to the surface to build seed money and a platform following. Attend this enlightening talk to learn more about how to use all sorts of methods to generate income, and how writing for a living is about more than a book ... it's about building a name as a writer as well as about selling a finished product. This presentation is made possible through the South Carolina New Writers Partnership, the South Carolina State Library, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Space is limited to the first fifteen who register - call Trudy Bazemore at 843-545-3303.
