The Georgetown County Library System began part of Phase 5 of their 7-phase re-opening strategy on Monday, July 13, library hours are Monday-Friday, 10 AM-6 PM.
Browsing (30 minutes in the adult and young adult stacks), curbside book delivery and limited access to circulation desks plus limited access to the adult computer area! - Patrons can receive Circulation Desk assistance, and faxing and copying services are available.
- Thirty (30) minute sessions are available for computers in the adult computer area.
- Patrons (including children three years of age and older) must wear a face covering if they enter the building. The Library has a limited number to give out.
- Curbside book delivery is still available.

This is a good opportunity to view adult programs and series that you might have missed (or want to see again) from the comfort of your home. Outstanding virtual programs for kids and families have been developed for Waccamaw and Georgetown libraries. For more information, visit: Adult Programs NEW: Georgetown Library Presents "DigiBridge" in July & August Live Talks Showcase Facets of Georgetown County History and Culture Beginning on Tuesday, July 21 at 2 PM, the Georgetown County Library System (GCLS) will broadcast live a series of ten humanities lectures by local specialists who will explore various elements of Georgetown County's deep and diverse history and culture. Because of COVID-19 concerns, library meeting rooms are currently closed to public gatherings. The "DigiBridge" online presentations will provide engaging educational content for library patrons and community members during this time, while also enabling folks to contribute to real-time Q&A sessions following each presentation through Facebook Live. All presentations will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2 PM in July and August, and will be free and openly available to the public online on the Georgetown County Library Facebook page. GCLS Director Dwight McInvaill said, "We are indeed grateful for the stalwart support of SC Humanities. This generous grant has enabled us to continue our humanities programming throughout our mainly rural, diverse, and small-town county." The grant is designed to engage independent scholars who are very knowledgeable about Georgetown County's special local heritage. The scheduled presenters include a host of respected names, who will speak to a rich range of subjects including the area's Gullah heritage, maritime history, ghostlore, a notable female indigo planter, and several important African American voices. We would like to draw your attention to the newly stocked shelves of "Bargain Books to Benefit FOWL" at the Litchfield Exchange (14363 Ocean Highway behind Applewood House of Pancakes). By now your book supply should be running low! Browse through organized hardcovers ($1) and paperbacks (50 cents) and find recent releases and older treasures you always meant to read. Your donations can be placed in the envelopes provided and slipped under the door of Art Works (if no one is on duty). The traditional FOWL Annual Book Sale in July has been postponed until the fall; it will be combined with the Holiday Book Sale on Nov. 12-15. Details soon.

1 PM - Gullah Geechee Salone-Mania at Brookgreen Gardens. The 50-minute interactive program held at the Wall Lowcountry Center is both entertaining and educational. An interactive, cultural game show informs viewers about the rice culture lived and passed down by Gullah Geechee people of the southeastern coastal United States and its connections with Salone (Sierra Leone, West Africa). Each guest becomes a "contestant" who will answer questions about Gullah Geechee people, songs, history, culture, foods, and trivia. Free with garden admission. 1-3 PM - Roses and Rosé on the Bay: Want to spice up your floral arrangements? Come to Hobcaw House lawn and learn the art of waxing roses and other flowers with the Hobcaw Barony horticulturist. A demonstration of waxing flowers will help to enhance any arrangement. Bring flowers from your own gardens should you wish to try waxing them. As the program winds down, participants will have the opportunity to sip rosé under the oaks and veranda of Hobcaw House while taking in the breathtaking views of the bay. The Hobcaw Barony Coordinator of Adult Education will also be on-hand to give a history of Hobcaw House. Participants will drive their own car to Hobcaw House. Join Hobcaw Barony's Horticulture staff at the Victory Garden at Bellefield Plantation and learn of the different types of herbs and plants that can be used to make refreshing and delicious teas and water. Discussion will also expand to learn which plants and herbs are wonderful hosts for butterflies and hummingbirds. Afterwards, participants will travel to Hobcaw House lawn via car caravan to sample teas and infused water. There will also be a sampling of many different plants for use. Friday, July 24 11 AM-1 PM - The Moveable Feast: Ron Wing/James Robert Fuller ( Myrtle Beach Crime Thrillers) at Inlet Affairs. Saturday, July 25 10 AM-5 PM - Celebrate "Winter Down Under" at the air-conditioned Litchfield Exchange. Join Art Works artists and CLASS authors and instructors for a day-long art/book fair. With tables safely distanced in the atrium of the Exchange, face masks required, handwipes and gloves available, we will hold this "Christmas in July" substitute event! Many of Art Works' 20 exhibiting artists have been very creative during the pandemic, and CLASS Publishing has added 7 books to its completed works. In addition, CLASS Learning Division instructors will demonstrate their planned fall classes and register students. It will be a good time to sign up for Moveable Feasts as well. Friday, Aug. 14 11 AM-1 PM - The Moveable Feast: Michael Allen ( From Tee to Shining Tee) at Pawleys Plantation. Over the years many people have played various Top 100 lists of golf courses. In 2013, Mike and Marilyn Allen decided to tackle their own unique bucket list. Not only did they want to play all the golf courses on Golf Digest's Top 100 Public Ranking, they wanted to play every public course that had ever been on any of their previous rankings as well. Golf Digest started their Top 100 Public Courses in America rankings in 2003. This obviously meant that were 100 courses to play, but since the magazine releases a new list every two years, new courses are added as others are removed. In 2005, for example, 16 new courses were added so there were now 116 golf courses to be tackled. This continued every two years, so by the time the Allen's embarked on their ambitious journey to play them all, the total had reached 157 courses. When their bucket list quest was completed in November, 2018, they had played every one of the 194 public courses currently available for play. This quest took them to 49 states but more importantly, it took them on the journey of a lifetime. This book is about the many adventures they experienced on this golf crusade that took six years to complete. It is about Discovering America, One Golf Course at a Time. All book sale proceeds will benefit the Pat Tillman Foundation to empower active duty service members, veterans and military spouses in the fields of healthcare, business, public service, STEM, education, and the humanities. A Plea for Help from Freewoods Farm: Freewoods Farm in Burgess (9515 Freewoods Road off U.S. 707) is the only African-American historical living farm museum in the United States, devoted to recognizing and perpetuating the contributions of African-American farmers. Due to the Coronavirus, the main source of funding - events, weddings, tours, etc. - for Freewoods Farm has dried up. It's planting time and there are expenses: cost of fertilizer, seed, labor, animal feed, insurance, etc. No mechanized machinery is used. Though they have applied for Federal loans/grants, they have heard nothing. President O'Neal Smalls is requesting financial help. Through July 29 - "In Your Face" exhibit by Esther Sharp at the Rice Museum (633 Front St., Georgetown). Commissioned portraits available by appointment: 11" x 14" - $349; 16" x 20" - $495. Revenue from all sales goes to support the Rice Museum. Through Summer - Open Air Tours of Hobcaw Barony. On this 8-mile open air tour, participants will get the opportunity to drive in their own vehicles to forage new grounds at the Barony. First stop of the tour is to Friendfield Village, an African American village, once home to 100 slaves and lived in by black employees until 1952. This in-depth tour is a more comprehensive exploration of Friendfield on foot, going through the cabins and the 19th century church. Hobcaw Barony has a unique chance to interpret history at the site, as gleaned from documents, photographs, oral histories and visits from former residents to learn the history of each location. Next, participants will follow the docent in their own cars to the pier at Hobcaw House to learn of the history of the house, family, and it's visitors. Exterior sites of exploration are: Pier, piazza, doll house, laundry, power house, gas pump, and smokehouse. Please note, on this portion of the tour, there will be no interior visits of the buildings. (Exertion level: High impact, walking on uneven terrain and standing for long periods) This program is weather dependent. It will be cancelled should inclement weather occur. Participants will need to dress for the weather and insects, wear light weight long sleeves and pants, as well as comfortable shoes. Participants may want to bring: hat, sunscreen, bug spray and water. Automobiles driving down Hobcaw Road must be able to navigate rustic roads of sand and dirt. Through Sept. 12 - Brookgreen Gardens presents Bruce Munro's Southern Light exhibit. The internationally known artist brings his spectacular large-scale light sculptures to the gardens, allowing visitors to literally see the gardens in a new light. The exhibit features seven works of art in light and mixed media, each designed specifically for the natural garden rooms where they will be installed. The illuminated installations will consist of tens of thousands of components. There are more than 700 events and 50 interviews per year. The calendar displays as a month, week, day or agenda. Each event is categorized (e.g., music, art), and you can choose to view any or all of the categories by clicking on them in the dropboxes at the top of the calendar. For health reasons, John is seeking a dedicated person or group to take the reins of this valuable website and continue to provide timely information about the quality cultural offerings along the Grand Strand.
