This newsletter: The Friends of Waccamaw Library's digital newsletter (sent on the first and 15th of each month) aims to let you know what's happening on the Waccamaw Neck and Georgetown (farther afield if it's library-related). This e-communication is sent to all Friends (whose e-dresses we have) and to all who ask to be added to the e-list.

In addition to the programming developed by the library system and the Friends (in red), we will cover other opportunities for quality experiences, education and entertainment. The information is organized by date, so scroll down to the date you are seeking. If you are part of a group or organization with news to share, we welcome your announcement. Keep it short; just the facts. We cannot reproduce an elaborate pdf with graphics and photos. The key information needed includes: Title of event, Where held, When (date and time), BRIEF description, Benefit for (if applicable), Cost (if any), Contact (phone and email), Website (for more information).

To be added to the e-mail list or to submit an announcement, please send your information directly to the e-newsletter editor Linda Ketron at:  linda@classatpawleys.com.

CALENDAR OF COMMUNITY EVENTS

Please Complete the 2020 Census to Help Our Community
The mission of the Friends of the Waccamaw Library is to support the library.  FOWL urges you to complete the 2020 Census to help us in our mission.  Federal and state funding relies on census data to allocate resources for libraries, school meal programs, Medicare and Medicaid, public transportation, education, recreation, and so many other important programs that are critical to our quality of life.  If SC citizens don't complete the 2020 Census, it will appear that our population has decreased, so funding to these vital programs will be decreased! We could lose our 7th seat in Congress (gained after the 2010 census revealed sufficient growth to add a seat). Right now, South Carolina is ranked 38th in the nation for Census Self-Response rates. That's not good! Worse still is learning that Georgetown County is ranked 39th
out of the 46 counties in our state for response rate. And the Pawleys Island/ Litchfield/Murrells Inlet precinct has the lowest response rate in the county! We must do better! Send this plea to all of your social network and take the 10 minutes to access and complete the 2020 Census online: www.2020census.gov or call 1.800.

A Plea for Help from Freewoods Farm
Freewoods Farm in Burgess (9515 Freewoods Road off U.S. 707) is the only African-American historical living farm museum in the United States, devoted to recognizing and perpetuating the contributions of African-American farmers. Due to the Coronavirus, the main source of funding - events, weddings, tours, etc. - for Freewoods Farm has dried up. It's planting time and there are expenses: cost of fertilizer, seed, labor, animal feed, insurance, etc. No mechanized machinery is used. Though they have applied for Federal loans/grants, they have heard nothing.  President O'Neal Smalls is requesting financial help. If you can, please send a check  payable to: Freewoods Foundation and mail to O'Neal Smalls, President, 900 Veterans Road, Columbia, SC 29209. Freewoods is a 501(c)(3) foundation and your contribution is tax deductible. For more information, visit www.FreewoodsFarm.com.

We would like to draw your attention to the newly stocked shelves of "Bargain Books to Benefit FOWL" at the Litchfield Exchange (14363 Ocean Highway behind Applewood House of Pancakes). By now your book supply should be running low! Browse through organized hardcovers ($1) and paperbacks (50 cents) and find recent releases and older treasures you always meant to read. Your donations can be placed in the envelopes provided and slipped under the door of Art Works (if no one is on duty). The traditional FOWL Annual Book Sale in July has been postponed until the fall; it will be combined with the Holiday Book Sale on Nov. 12-15. Details soon.

Wednesday, June 17
10 AM - Build a Bee House at Brookgreen Gardens. Mason bees nest in pre-made holes. Hole-nesting bees represent about 25% of the world's bee species and are very important to reducing stress on the honeybee.
We can increase Mason bee populations by raising them in our backyards and gardens, which is a great way to supplement pollination, sustain our future food supply, and provide nesting sites for other native bees, too. This class, held at the Leonard Pavilion, will teach you how to build a house for your own yard to attract Mason bees! Bring work gloves or garden gloves! Tickets Members $20, Non-Members $35. 843.235.6000 or www.Brookgreen.org.

Noon - The South Carolina Maritime Museum is having a virtual History for Lunch event via Zoom. Bob Chaulk (Halifax, Nova Scotia) will present the "SS Atlantic: The White Star Line's First Disaster at Sea." Registration is $5 to receive the Zoom connection information. To register, you may email hha.scmm@gmail.comor call 843.520.0111, or visit
https://scmaritimemuseum.org.

1 PM - Gullah Geechee Salone-Mania at Brookgreen Gardens. The 50-minute interactive program held at the Wall Lowcountry Center is both entertaining and educational. An interactive, cultural game show informs viewers about the rice culture lived and passed down by Gullah Geechee people of the southeastern coastal United States and its connections with Salone (Sierra Leone, West Africa). Each guest becomes a "contestant" who will answer questions about Gullah Geechee people, songs, history, culture, foods, and trivia. Free with garden admission. Limited seating, reservations required. Also offered June 24, July 8, 15, 22 & 29, Aug. 5, 12, 19 & 26. 843.235.6049 or www.Brookgreen.org.

Saturday, June 20
8 AM-Noon - Family Fun: Day in the Garden. Learn about the history of horticulture at the functioning Hobcaw Barony Victory Garden! Families drive themselves to this open house at Bellefield Plantation to participate in a hands-on learning experience. Participants immerse themselves in interactive stations that demonstrate gardening practices, stages of decomposition, and dyeing techniques through history. Embark on a scavenger hunt, find your way through a corn maze, witness a ladybug release, and even take a plant home to start your own garden! Recommended for ages 6 and up. (Exertion level:  Moderate impact- walking on rough terrain, bending down while planting in garden, standing for long periods of time; outdoor program.) Reservations required, $15 per adult, $10 per child (age 13 and below).

This in-depth tour is a more comprehensive exploration of Friendfield on foot, going through the cabins and the 19th century church. Hobcaw Barony has a unique chance to interpret history at the site, as gleaned from documents, photographs, oral histories and visits from former residents to learn the history of each location. Next, participants will follow the docent in their own cars to the pier at Hobcaw House to learn of the history of the house, family, and it's visitors. Exterior sites of exploration are: Pier, piazza, doll house, laundry, power house, gas pump, and smokehouse. Please note, on this portion of the tour, there will be no interior visits of the buildings. (Exertion level: High impact, walking on uneven terrain and standing for long periods)

The illuminated installations will consist of tens of thousands of components. Wednesdays-Saturdays through September 12, 8-11 PM, members ($20 adult, $12 - children 4-12) and non-members ($25 adult, $15 - children 4-12), 843.235.6000 or www.Brookgreen.org.

Cultural events on the Grand Strand - Check out this updated nonprofit website: www.TheArtsGrandStrand.org, created and maintained by Murrells Inlet resident John Morken, is a complete calendar and guide to the fine arts from Calabash to Conway to Georgetown.  There are more than 700 events and 50 interviews per year.  The calendar displays as a month, week, day or agenda. Each event is categorized (e.g., music, art), and you can choose to view any or all of the categories by clicking on them in the dropboxes at the top of the calendar. For health reasons, John is seeking a dedicated person or group to take the reins of this valuable website and continue to provide timely information about the quality cultural offerings along the Grand Strand. He estimates the time commitment at 3-5 hours per week. If you are interested, please contact him at jmorken27@gmail.com.
