Your bi-monthly newsletter is here!

What's happening on the Waccamaw Neck ~ compliments of the Friends of Waccamaw Library!

The Friends of Waccamaw Library's bi-monthly digital newsletter aims to let you know what's happening on the Waccamaw Neck and Georgetown (farther afield if it's library-related). This e-communication supplements the hard copy newsletter mailed quarterly and is sent to all Friends (whose e-dresses we have) and to all who ask to be added to the Constant Contact list.

In addition to the programming developed by the library system and the Friends (in red), we will cover other opportunities for quality experiences, education and entertainment. The information is organized by date, so scroll down to the date you are seeking. If you are part of a group or organization with news to share, we welcome your announcement. Keep it short; just the facts. We cannot reproduce an elaborate pdf with graphics and photos. The key information needed includes: Title of event, Where held, When (date and time), BRIEF description, Benefit for (if applicable), Cost (if any), Contact (phone and email), Website (for more information).

To be added to the e-mail list or to submit an announcement, please send your information directly to the e-newsletter editor Linda Ketron at:  linda@classatpawleys.com.

6:30 PM - FOWL presents Kevin Duffus, noted North Carolina author, filmmaker, and research historian who has made numerous historical discoveries, presents a lecture on the shipwrecks off the Carolina coast in the DeBordieu Auditorium at Waccamaw Library. For more than 450 years, shipwrecks shaped the destiny of the Carolina coast, creating one of the most intriguing histories and cultures in America. Duffus, author of the 2007 book Shipwrecks of the Outer Banks - An Illustrated Guide, will dive into some of the most spectacular stories, including rumors of wreckers, the causes for the Graveyard of the Atlantic, and the hundreds of forgotten shipwreck victims buried in the sandy seabed. Audience members will also learn precise locations of famous and deadly wrecks, as well as places to see remains of shipwrecks today. When only 17, Duffus found, explored, and identified a sunken Confederate gunboat in an eastern North Carolina river. In 2002, he solved what was called "the greatest mystery of American lighthouse history" and found the 6,000-lb., 1853 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Fresnel lens missing since the Civil War. His book, The Lost Light - A Civil War Mystery, follows the incredible 150-year odyssey of the lens. He is also the author of the controversial and groundbreaking book The Last Days of Black Beard the Pirate. In 2012, Kevin wrote and published War Zone - World War Two Off the North Carolina Coast, which won the Willie Parker Peace Award. In his first career in television he produced programs and documentaries in England, East Africa, Central America, and the Philippines. His productions have been honored by the George Foster Peabody Award, the World Hunger Media Award, the Edward R. Murrow Award and the National Education Association Award. In 2014, the North Carolina Society of Historians named Kevin, NC Historian of the Year. To reserve a seat or for more information, email sbremner@gtcounty.org.

Moïse served with distinction as SC game warden for nearly a quarter century, patrolling the coastal woods and waters. The colorful, cigar-chomping, ticket-writing scourge of lowcountry fish-and-game-law violators discusses his treacherous and often hilarious job. With a lawman's eye for fine details, a conservationist's nose for the aroma of pluff mud, and a seasoned storyteller's ear for the rhythms of a good southern yarn, Moïse recounts his efforts to protect the lowcountry landscape. Moïse also speaks of evolving attitudes and changing regulations governing coastal conservation. In recognition of his achievements in law enforcement, he was presented the Guy Bradley Award by the North American Fish and Wildlife Foundation in 1990 and the Order of the Palmetto by South Carolina governor Carroll Campbell in 1994. He is a contributor to the Charleston Post and Courier, Charleston Mercury, Garden and Gun Magazine and author of Ramblings of a Lowcountry Game Warden. 11 AM-1 PM - RESCHEDULED The Moveable Feast: Geraldine Brooks (The Secret Chord) at Pawleys Plantation. A master of bringing the past alive, Pulitzer Prize winner (March) and international bestseller (Caleb's Crossing), Geraldine Brooks seems able to time travel. Sometimes, reading her work, she draws you so thoroughly into another era that you swear she's actually lived in it. Peeling away the myth to bring the Old Testament's King David to life in Second Iron Age Israel, Brooks traces the arc of his journey from obscurity to fame, from shepherd to soldier, from hero to traitor, from beloved king to murderous despot and into his remorseful and diminished dotage. The Secret Chord provides new context for some of the best-known episodes of David's life while also focusing on others that have been neglected. We see David through the eyes of those who love him or fear him - from the prophet Natan, voice of his conscience, to his wives Mikhal, Avigail, and Batsheva, and finally to Solomon, the late-born son who redeems his Lear-like old age. Brooks has an uncanny ability to hear and transform characters from history, and this beautifully written, unvarnished saga of faith, desire, family, ambition, betrayal, and power will enthrall her many fans. $45 (includes book), 843.235.9600.
