Your bi-monthly FOWL newsletter is here!

What's happening on the Waccamaw Neck ~ compliments of the Friends of Waccamaw Library!

The Friends of Waccamaw Library's bi-monthly digital newsletter aims to let you know what's happening on the Waccamaw Neck and Georgetown (farther afield if it's library-related). This e-communication supplements the hard copy newsletter mailed quarterly and is sent to all Friends (whose e-dresses we have) and to all who ask to be added to the Constant Contact list.

In addition to the programming developed by the library system and the Friends (in red), we will cover other opportunities for quality experiences, education and entertainment. The information is organized by date, so scroll down to the date you are seeking. If you are part of a group or organization with news to share, we welcome your announcement. Keep it short; just the facts. We cannot reproduce an elaborate pdf with graphics and photos. The key information needed includes: Title of event, Where held, When (date and time), BRIEF description, Benefit for (if applicable), Cost (if any), Contact (phone and email), Website (for more information).

To be added to the e-mail list or to submit an announcement, please send your information directly to the e-newsletter editor Linda Ketron at:  linda@classatpawleys.com.

11 AM-1 PM - The Moveable Feast: Ernest Merchant (Lost and Found) at Ocean One, Litchfield. This is not your stereotypical gay-hairdresser-addict-convict story ... if there is such a thing. In the vein of Augusten Burroughs and Jeannette Walls, Lost and Found is a harrowing tale of survival in a world hostile to diversity. The memoir spans five decades, from the young boy whose search for identity and self-empowerment begins with the haunting observation, "there are no pictures of me as a baby," through a dark, spiraling vortex of bad decisions, while "looking for love in all the wrong places." With unflinching candor, Merchant explores the issues of sexual diversity, drug addiction, crime and punishment, and social prejudice. His sardonic humor and clear-eyed honesty take the reader on a dangerous journey, battling the demons of self-destruction - a war that turns out to be surprisingly uplifting. Published by CLASS Publishing, $30, 843.235.9600 or ClassAtPawleys.com.

His creator, Anthony Joseph Tata (aka A.J. and Tony), served 28 years in the United States Army before retiring in 2009. His military accomplishments merit a google expedition. He currently serves as the National Security Expert for One American News Network, appearing every Tuesday with Liz Wheeler on Tipping Point. The entertaining and dynamic duo's style has been compared to Lester Young and Billie Holiday. Audiences can sense the communication and love they have for each other and their commitment to their relationship and the music that is born from it. Bob is a Ford Foundation Grant and National Endowment for the Arts recipient. He recently won the composition and arrangement competition of the PA Jazz Collective for 2016 for his original jazz composition, "Herb Fisher." Pam was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Lehigh Valley Music Awards in 2016, the first female to receive this honor in the history of the Music Awards. 11 AM-1 PM - The Moveable Feast: Georgia Hunter (We Were the Lucky Ones) at Kimbel's, Wachesaw. Inspired by the incredible true story of the Kurcs, a Jewish family living in Radom, Poland, who were separated at the start of World War II, determined to survive - and to reunite - Hunter excavates the remarkable history of her own family in this sweeping novel spanning six years and five continents. A tribute to the triumph of hope and love against all odds. Each of the five children of Sol and Nechuma Kurc found themselves desperately trying to find a way to survive the hostilities that permeated Europe. During the course of the war, the Kurcs are flung to distant points on the globe, from Brazil to Siberia. They work for the underground, fight battles in Italy, and are imprisoned in gulags. They stage daring escapes from ghettos, hide in plain sight in Polish cities and, always, yearn for the days when their family was whole. V-day finds some of the Kurcs together, but the celebration is empty; they are still sundered, mourning, and directionless. The Kurc family's final triumph is not tied to the defeat of the Nazis, but to the family's survival and reunion against impossible odds. Hunter sidesteps hollow sentimentality and nihilism, revealing instead the beautiful complexity and ambiguity of life in this extraordinarily moving tale.  $30, 843.235.9600 or ClassAtPawleys.com.

ONGOING!

TheArtsGrandStrand.com - Check out this updated nonprofit website, created and maintained by Murrells Inlet resident John Morken, to keep you informed about all of the cultural events on the Grand Strand. Dedicated to making it easy to know about all the Fine Arts events, it strips away pop culture and tourist attractions found in other guides. The What's Happening page has artists, performers and sponsors personally telling you what they are presenting NOW, along with ads for events. The calendar displays as a month, week, day or agenda. Each event is categorized (e.g., music, art), and you can choose to view any or all of the categories by clicking on them in the dropboxes at the top of the calendar.

Through Dec. 29 - The Kaminski House Museum presents A Very Fashionable Christmas! The theme is A Celebration of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Ten local and area design specialists will decorate each room of the museum in various time periods throughout the years. Candlelight Evenings and Family Nite dates will be announced. 11 AM-3 PM, 843.546.7706.

Through Jan. 2, 2018 - Brookgreen Holiday Exhibits open daily and during Nights of a Thousand Candles. Two indoor exhibits are beautiful additions to our seasonal celebration and are included in admission. Daily 9:30 AM-5 PM, 843.235.6000 or Brookgreen.org.

Through March 2018 - Handcrafted Wooden Boats by William "Bill" Brady on display at the Waccamaw Library. Bill never dreamed he would become a shipwright, and his sailing vessels are sized more for Stuart Little than Captain Ahab, but the man is a genius at fashioning fascinating crafts perfect down to the tiniest detail.
