| The Friends of Waccamaw Library's bi-monthly digital newsletter aims to let you know what's happening on the Waccamaw Neck and Georgetown (farther afield if it's library-related). This e-communication supplements the hard copy newsletter mailed quarterly and is sent to all Friends (whose e-dresses we have) and to all who ask to be added to the Constant Contact list.
In addition to the programming developed by the library system and the Friends (in red), we will cover other opportunities for quality experiences, education and entertainment. The information is organized by date, so scroll down to the date you are seeking. If you are part of a group or organization with news to share, we welcome your announcement. Keep it short; just the facts. We cannot reproduce an elaborate pdf with graphics and photos. November-December Artist at the Waccamaw Library: Cynthia Hoppin Shuler Cynthia's stunning artwork series, Salt Life, is a combination of impressionistic and expressionistic influences, with a rich pallet of joyous color. She enjoys painting the wide range of subject matter available in the Low Country, and is particularly drawn to the figurative riches presented by the beaches of the Grand Strand. Shuler studied in San Antonio, Texas, where she won a competitive fine art scholarship at the University of Texas, Austin. She completed her B.F.A. at Miami University in Ohio, and did further post graduate studio work at the University of Tennessee. In the summer of 2016 she studied at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy. Her work has been on display in several states and competed in international, national, and regional shows, winning several awards. The Waccamaw Library presents a two-month exhibit featuring the works of eleven fantastic nature photographers from the Myrtle Beach Region of the Carolinas' Nature Photographers Association. CNPA is a group of amateur and professional nature photographers based in the Northeast area of South Carolina and the extreme Southeast area of North Carolina. The group promotes nature photography in the Carolinas and an awareness and appreciation of the area's natural beauty. Enjoy riveting scenes of birds, insects, beaches, flowers and more from Sandra Anderson, Gary Baird, Sandra Barnes, Steve Brooks, Patricia Tanner Candal, Roger Doyle, Bonnie Eaglin, Terri Eddinger, David Fattaleh, Clarke Hayes, Anne Malarich, and Peter Maronge. Tickets available for the FOWL Holiday Happening! Join us on Sunday, Dec. 10, from 3-5 PM at the Waccamaw Library for a two-fold fundraiser featuring Lee Brockington and Bill Oberst Jr. giving their sometimes touching, sometimes hilarious readings of holiday classics. The two benefits include raising the remaining funds needed to name one of the Waccamaw Library meeting rooms for the Chandler/ Peterkin family. (Memories of Genevieve "Sister" Peterkin will surround the DeBordieu Colony Auditorium.) Once we reach the $15,000 needed and pay the minimal fee to place a plaque above the door, the rest of the $15K will be donated toward a starter collection of library books for the coming South Georgetown Library (serving North Santee, Sampit and Saints Delight communities). FOWL is already delivering boxes of books to distribute throughout South Georgetown in anticipation of the new library. Guests will be served wassail, tea, coffee and great holiday cookies! French Film Festival passes (six films for $8) are available Dec. 1 at Art Works in the Litchfield Exchange. Georgetown Library Call for Volunteers for the Yuletide Home Tour on Dec. 9th. Docents needed in all the houses on the tour, as well as a couple of the houses of worship. Docents for the Tour are "greeters" to the homes, a vital role in making participants feel welcomed. The shifts are two hours long (1:00-3:00 or 3:00-5:00) giving time to see some of the other sites during the remaining two hours. Besides the joy of sharing the Yuletide spirit, the benefits of being a docent include a free ticket for the Tour and an invitation with a guest to our opening reception at the Library on Friday evening, Dec. 8 at 6 PM. John Lane is professor of English and Environmental Studies at Wofford College and director of the Goodall Environmental Studies Center. He is the author of a dozen books of poetry and prose. A member of the South Carolina Academy of Authors, Lane is one of the co-founders of Spartanburg's Hub City Writers Project. Hastings Hensel is the author of the poetry collection Winter Inlet, winner of the 2014-2015 Unicorn Press First Book Prize, and the poetry chapbook Control Burn, winner of the 2011 Iron Horse Literary Review Single-Author Contest. His poems have appeared in numerous literary journals. 6:30 PM - "The Nutcracker" at Waccamaw Library. See the 2011 Lincoln Center performance by New York City Ballet. The live performance of the ballet was a spectacle like no other, involving 90 New York City Ballet dancers, 62 musicians, 32 stagehands and two casts of 50 young students from the school of American Ballet. Tschaikovsky's music, the choreography of George Balanchine, sumptuous costumes and lavish sets all added to the magic. Lincoln Center, at the time, reported that the one-ton Christmas tree that grew from a height of 12 feet to 40 feet brought audible gasps of disbelief from the audience at each performance. Friday, Dec. 15 11 AM-1 PM - The Moveable Feast: Diane Michael Cantor (When Nighttime Shadows Fall) at Carefree Catering. In the early 1970s, Laura Bauer decides to leave college and head fifty miles north of her comfortable Atlanta home to manage a federally funded project aiding pregnant teenagers from the back roads of Appalachia. Almost as young as her clients, Laura is immediately confronted with - and almost overwhelmed by - a variety of young women in desperate circumstances, having no other source of prenatal care. Cantor's second novel portrays the world of these girls with compassion, hardscrabble humor, and reverence for their families' capacities to prevail despite hardships. 5 PM - The 3rd Annual MarshWalk Santa Crawl in Murrells Inlet. Participants are encouraged to dress in their finest Christmas-themed attire as they celebrate on the MarshWalk and enjoy the holiday fun one bar at a time. Each of the eight MarshWalk Restaurants and Bars plan to feature holiday drink and dinner specials along with live holiday music. The first 25 guests to arrive at each restaurant (totaling 200 guests) will receive a FREE beaded shot glass necklace. Also, the MarshWalk group will be giving away a $1000 cash prize to the individual whose holiday outfit best represents the spirit of the season.
